Meet the Team: Ranran (Vivian) Lu

What's your role on the Third Pie Studios team and what all does this entail?
I am a 2D character artist on the TPS team. I've designed and developed all the characters so far. It has been a great journey in a wonderland to imagine completely new characters and concepts with my awesome teammates. Usually, I start with mood boards and sketches for the whole team to pick what we like. Then I use my magic Photoshop brushes to give them lives to walk on the land of Cataria.
Besides characters, I also developed a new logo and title card for Ages of Cataria.
I left TPS around mid April due to my personal work status. You can always find me on my instagram! <3
What interested you in game development?
What interested me the most is the world setting of the game, the stories behind all the characters, and the causes of events. I feel free when I dive into the imagination ocean and think about what can happen, and what would happen in game development.
What are your favorite video games, and why?
My favorite games are the Final Fantasy series. I cannot pick which FF is my favorite. They have great characters, great stories, great music, everything about it is great. I know I am very biased in this matter, but FF games have made me cry too many times and I just can’t help but love/hate them.
If you could be any video game character (past, present, or future) who would you be?
I want to be the Warrior of Light in Final Fantasy 14. WOL got the opportunity to travel around the world and between worlds to fight bad guys, make friends with everyone, and become another species/gender by drinking the Fantasia potion.
What about Ages of Cataria are you most excited about?
It is the world setting and the stories behind Ages of Cataria that I am most excited about. The world of Cataria has so much potential to have great stories, and it is going to be every player’s story.
What are your favorite non-gaming things to do?
That’s a hard question, haha. I love watching fantasy movies, hiking in nature, and I love to play TRPG Call of Cthulhu as the Keeper. I love directing my players into these scary imaginary worlds and helping them solve mysteries and fight for their own lives. One great thing about TRPG is that I can act it out myself. I can imagine I am inside the world, and feel it with my own senses. I think this is related to why I love games so much, to experience something outside of this world.
